Tales from the Dig Site

Nixret lowered her pack and placed it gently on the ground in front of her cot in the small barracks near the Azlanti dig site. “Finally! Field work!” She thought to herself. Of course, the field work was to be heavily supervised, and concerned a site that had been stripped of all known dangers by actual agents—not initiates like she and her companions. Still, training or not, it was a field assignment, her first time spending significant time outside of the Grand Lodge in Absalom since she first left the Sewer Dragon warrens to join the Society. Even if it wasn’t the real type of field work she read about countless times in the Chronicles, it was still one step closer to her Confirmation—and from there, her story could really begin.

July 2023 Organized Play Adventure Previews

The Starfinder Society is hard at work investigating the Organization and their operations, including Project Dawn, a plot already set in motion that threatens the lives of millions. This month, a team of Starfinders is put in touch with Almina, a Starfinder from the past who personally knew the founders of the Organization. With information about the founders in hand, the Starfinders travel to Deepwater Prime to investigate a long-abandoned archeological site that the founders once excavated. This site is believed to have a connection to Ulumbia, an ancient civilization that had little historical impact on the planet and left even less archeological evidence behind. Your job? Uncover why the Organization is interested in ancient Ulumbia, determine if the Organization is still operating on Deepwater Prime, and follow up on any leads you unearth.

Organized Play Preview: 2023 Interactive Events

Today we’re giving you a sneak peek into our two upcoming multi-table interactive events for the 2023 Paizo Organized Play season! Every year, Pathfinder Organized Play and Starfinder Organized Play each release one multi-table event that can be played with as few as three tables and well over 150+ tables at the world’s largest gaming events. These are intended to be epic adventures where players work alongside each other to accomplish monumental feats and battle great evils. In the past, these events were tied to key story points for Organized Play. In recent years, our special events have been standalone adventures that tell exciting but isolated stories, making them usable at conventions and special events for many years to come. This year, we’re continuing this trend, with two exciting interactive events that are standalone, so they can be enjoyed by anyone at any time.

Starfinder Society Year 5 Rule Updates

Greetings, Starfinders! The launch of the Year of Redemption’s Rise is less than a month away, and we hope you’re all excited. Jessica and I are here today to talk about some of the new rule changes taking effect on May 27th, when Year 5 launches at PaizoCon. Our transition to Achievement Points last year was a big shift, so this year we’re keeping things simple.

Organized Play Sanctioning Update - April 2022

Greetings, players! With the Book of the Dead release coming next week, we wanted to take a moment to talk about sanctioning content. The rulebook resulted in a fair amount of discussion internally, and we thought it was a good idea to take a step back and look at how our sanctioning works.

April 2022 Organized Play Monthly Update

It’s no secret that the past two years have been hard on the program. One w¬ay we’ve seen this most clearly is in convention support. Prior to the pandemic, we would send out support to hundreds of events worldwide; obviously, mass gatherings have been in short supply since then. Last year was our smallest year since we started keeping records in 2016.

Organized Play Preview: 2022 Interactive Events

Today we’re going to pull back the curtain on our two upcoming multi-table interactive events for the 2022 Paizo Organized Play season. If you’re not familiar, Pathfinder and Starfinder Organized Play release yearly multi-table events that can be played with as few as three tables and well over 150+ tables at the world’s largest events. These are intended to be epic adventures where players can work alongside others to accomplish monumental feats and battle great evils. In the past, these events have often been tied to key story points for Organized Play. Last year, we explored the unique events of a Pathfinder and Starfinder crossover. This year, we’re keeping away from the ongoing metaplots of our Organized Play years and making our multi-table interactive events a bit more standalone, so they can be enjoyed by anyone at any time.

Starfinder Society: Year 5 Announcement

In the aftermath of the Data Scourge, the Starfinder Society fractures along faction lines! Infighting, power grabs, and suspicion run rampant, all threatening to tear the Society apart. Faced with the past mistakes of the Society, the betrayal and heinous crimes of former Starfinders, the grievances of active agents, and the weakening of external alliances, First Seeker Ehu Hadif embarks on a year of change. He opens the floor to all agents, giving them a platform to voice concerns, plans, and ambitions, and lobby for change. New factions are founded, reforms are enacted, relationships are mended, and trust is tentatively reforged.

February Scenario Previews

This month we’re back on the trail of legendary explorer Jelev Rasheen! Well known for her voyages at the dawn of Drift travel, Jelev made regular trips into the Drift, returning every few years with holds full of treasures and relics from distant worlds. After her mysterious disappearance, dozens of alleged children, partners, and adventuring companions spread one final tale about Rasheen: that she was last seen commanding a fleet of ships laden with treasure. Over the years, the Starfinder Society has investigated two of Jelev Rasheen’s treasure beacons, and now they’ve discovered a third. So buckle up and blast off, Starfinders! There’s treasure out there! Starfinder Society Scenario #4-14: Rasheen’s Riches is a scenario for levels 7–10 written by Mara Lynn Butler.

January 2022 Organized Play Monthly Update

I don’t usually make New Year’s resolutions. That’s not because I’m perfect—far from it!—but because inevitably I will forget about them in a couple of weeks without someone to hold me accountable. Happy Holidays 2021 from Organized Play!

Greetings, friends, and happy holidays! Whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, First Choices, Winterbloom, Festivus, or Christmas—whether your holidays are done for the year or just beginning—we hope you’re spending the close of the year surrounded by your chosen family, friends, and loved ones. Here at Organized Play, we’re hunkered down for the year. Linda has dug herself free of the sanctioning slush pile and dashed off into the woods; Mike is trying to put his gingerbread house back together after something shadowy smashed it to bits; Jessica has finally decrypted her holiday card list; and Thurston… well. Who knows what nonsense Thurston is cooking up these days. I myself will be spending the holidays curled up with my husband and a good book as I desperately try to complete my resolution of cutting down the pile of books on my bedside table.

December Society Previews

This month, it’s all about the holidays! At the urging of a cheery raxilite, the Starfinders perform good deeds to spread cheer during three popular Pact Worlds holidays: First Choices, Newspark, and Reunion. First Choices is a shirren diaspora celebration where celebrants share their personal achievements and interests through gift giving. Newspark is a holiday first commemorated by androids to celebrate hope in dark times, known today for its extravagant parades. Finally, Reunion is an Akitonian holiday focused on sharing food and strengthening bonds of love, family, and friendship. Starfinder Society Scenario #4-12: A Festive Operation is a repeatable scenario for levels 3–6 written by Ivis K. Flanagan. I hope this adventure brings joy and laughter to your gaming tables this month!

December 2021 Organized Play Update

As we approach the end of the year, it's tradition to look back on the year that was. There are many words I could use to describe this year in Organized Play: turbulent, uncertain, hopeful...the list goes on. In some ways we have made progress from where we were last year: physical games are slowly starting up in some areas, we've got piles of new content for our players, and we've produced another full year of scenarios. By the same token, there are still many areas that haven't changed: conventions are mostly still online, and we're not sure what the future of large-scale shows will look like.

Giving Thanks in 2021

Today is Thanksgiving in the United States, so the Organized Play team wanted to take a moment to give thanks to our Paizo community. Without you all, the worlds of Pathfinder and Starfinder would be just stories we told ourselves. We’re grateful for all your support and wish you well as this year comes to a close. We also want to thank the Organized Play community organizers for supporting our programs in these turbulent times. Without the venture-officers, we would lack structure, and without GMs, we would lack games. To all of you who spend time planning schedules and completing tasks behind the scenes, a huge shout out of thanks!

November Scenario Previews

This month, First Seeker Ehu Hadif dispatches Starfinders to Eborth, a planet claiming to possess technology immune to the Data Scourge, which they’ll share in exchange for Pact Worlds protectorate status. Alongside representatives from the Stewards and the Xenowardens, the Starfinders serve as envoys tasked with reviewing the world’s petition. On the record, the Starfinders are concerned with examining Eborth’s archaeological sites for clues to the planet’s past, but behind the scenes, the Starfinders must determine if the claims regarding Eborth’s technology are true. With the fate of both Eborth and the Pact Worlds hanging in the balance, there’s sure to be more going on than meets the eye! It all started when Starfinder launched and John Compton (lead of Organized Play development at the time) kept threatening me with a “Time Capsule Boon” where he’d let Pathfinder Society Characters transition into Starfinder Society. It was something of the atomic bomb equivalent of threats to be uttered in the office. The idea of crossing the streams between the campaigns was ludicrous. LUDICROUS, I SAY!

June 2021 Organized Play Update

I thought about writing “no musings, head empty, only PaizoCon” in this space but Tonya told me I couldn’t I decided against it. Instead, I’m going to take this space to give a shout-out to some people who went above and beyond in making PaizoCon Online happen this year. Please note that I’m writing this two days before the convention due to deadlines, so if I forgot someone, I can still blame Convention Brain.

Guidance’s Request

Ehu Hadif paced back and forth in the Cortex server room, his anxious footsteps beating a staccato rhythm against the tiles. Two of the kasatha’s hands were clasped behind his back, while the other two fiddled with his comm unit and datapad, restlessly checking his feeds for incoming messages.

Playing Games at PaizoCon

Last March, when we shifted physical gaming to digital spaces, the Online Region Venture-Officers wrote two guest blogs focused on their experiences using digital mediums such as Virtual Table Tops (VTTs) and Play-by-Post to keep our gaming communities connected. Their advice is as relevant today as it was last spring, so we’ve linked them here for reference.

May 2021 Organized Play Update

When Paizo hired me, there were a lot of hazards that I expected to come with the job. Traveling a lot? Hasn’t been an issue yet, but I’m prepared for that. Spending more on dice? That’s alright, I don’t have to buy rulebooks anymore, surely that’ll be an even trade (it’s not, but don’t tell my budget). Increased stress from dealing with the public? I worked retail, I’ll be alright. The thing I didn’t anticipate, however, was that my job would become impossible to describe to people.

Pathfinder Society Playtest Rules: Gunslinger and Inventor

Welcome to 2021! How about a playtest to start off with a bang? After not participating in the Pathfinder Secrets of Magic playtest and reading the feedback from our players and GMs, we put our heads together to come up with a way to engage our Organized Play community that worked within the Pathfinder Society framework. We settled on a model based on the Starfinder Society method that will allow our community to participate in the Pathfinder Guns & Gears playtest (see the announcement here). This framework works within established Society guidelines, doesn’t leave credit on unusable characters, and encourages players to get involved. We believe this method is flexible enough to use for future playtests and will add a section to the Guides to Organized Play to provide guidance to players and GMs.

Organized Play Scenario Prices

Beginning January 4, 2021, prices for all Pathfinder Society (second edition) and Starfinder Society scenarios, as well as the Pathfinder Bounties, will increase due to rising production costs. High-level scenarios (level range 7-10 and higher) received an additional increase due to the extra time and attention needed from authors/developers related to added complexity of play at higher levels. To help our community with budgeting costs, we plan to produce no more than one high-level scenario per month across both Pathfinder and Starfinder Society lines.

Organized Play Monthly Update

In many ways, I’m relieved to see the home stretch of 2020 and that the new year lies just beyond the horizon. With Covid, murder hornets, wildfires, protests, elections, and beloved icons passing, this year packed more into it than I’d expect in a decade. I felt the lack of conventions the most. You, our community, mean the world to me and it physically hurt not to get to meet up with you and get to chat about gaming, organized play, and maybe even our favorite television shows (though I have a great store of talking points now!). As vaccine availability allows us to reopen, I urge everyone to not rush back into games spaces, but to do so responsibility in an effort to keep our communities safe! We will be back together again soon, but only by being careful can we all be together again.

Giving Thanks to Our Community

Today is Thanksgiving in the United States, and several other countries celebrated their day of giving thanks over the past months. While celebrations look very different for all of us this year, we wanted to take a moment to give thanks to our Paizo community. Without you all, the worlds of Pathfinder and Starfinder would be just stories we told ourselves. We’re grateful for all your support, and wish you well as this year comes to a close. We also want to thank the Organized Play community organizers for supporting our programs in the face of tremendous adversity. Without the venture-officers, we would lack structure and without GMs, games. To all of you who spend time planning schedules and completing tasks behind the scenes, a huge shout out of thanks!

Starfinder Society November Previews

“You have sixty seconds to eject your stolen cargo before my gunners blast you out of the sky,” Brigadier Tassada Kor barks into the comms, watching the battle from her position on the bridge. The decorated vesk officer commands the dreadnought Talon’s Razor, crewed by 435 stalwart souls loyal to the Veskarium, and she did not tolerate pirates in her corner of space. The targets of her ire, three smaller ships darting and wheeling in the viewport in front of her, spit lasers as they arced close before speeding out of range of her vessel’s firing arcs. The Razor’s hull shakes violently, sparks raining into the black as enemy weapons slam into the shields. Tenacious opponents, Tassada admired them for it, but their insolence must end. When Tassada directed her crew to the outskirts of Veskarium space to investigate reports of piracy, she unintentionally kicked a hornets’ nest of smugglers and their mercenary escorts. The vessels in her crosshairs now were the last of the ragtag armada challenging the Talon’s Razor.

Next, Luis Loza takes us over the horizon with a level 3–6 adventure, Pathfinder Society Scenario 2-04: Path of Kings, as the Society follows the legendary route of the Linnorm Kings to scout a site for a new Pathfinder lodge in northern Arcadia.

September 2020 Starfinder Society Releases

It sure sounds like the Starfinder Society’s resident intelligence, Guidance, has something going on! Well, that’s probably because it’s preparing for our upcoming September releases. First up, author Rigby Bendele brings us Starfinder Society #3-07: Strike at Zone 78, which takes a group of Starfinders back to the copaxis homeworld of Tabrid Minor to investigate an area stricken by strange storms and gravitic anomalies. Meanwhile, we kick-off our high-level series of adventures with Kendra Leigh Speedling’s Starfinder Society #3-08: Fleeting Truth: The Darkside Depository, which begins an investigation into a thread of the Society’s history and that has wider implications for the entire Starfinder setting!

Organized Play Initiative: Digitization

Several years ago, as part of the program assessment made at the time of the Pathfinder (second edition) Playtest, the team embarked on a huge initiative spanning several years: digitization. This year, with Covid-19 pushing us into our homes and away from our traditional spaces, we are both pleased to have started the process and dismayed that our timelines aren’t aggressive enough. But we’ve gotten through Phase 1 and we thought it would be a good time to talk over some of the items we’ve completed, as well as what Phase 2 looks like.

The Seeds of Characters

Before you sit down to play a tabletop RPG like Pathfinder or Starfinder, you need a character. I mean, sure, you could play one of our nifty pregenerated characters for a while. But sooner or later, you’re gonna want to let your own imagination roam, making characters that help you tell the stories you want to be part of. But where to start? Here are four sources of inspiration that work well for me and other people I’ve played with.

September Update— Volunteering, Stars, Spotlights and Conventions!

I joined Paizo’s Organized Play team in September 2015. Looking back over the past 5 years, I’ve collected several happy memories, made wonderful friends, and achieved important milestones. I’ve also learned a few hard lessons in communication and process implementation along the way. I’ve cried with some of you, laughed with more of you, and would happily do it all over again if I could.

Meleeka drops into a ready stance. Legs spread slightly more than shoulder-width apart, left knee touching the ground, the ball of her right foot raised and poised to launch her in any direction at a moment’s notice. She begins slowly sweeping her arms in broad, circular movements, fingers curled like grasping talons as she channels her rage and negative emotions out of her body, giving them shape as flickering flames shrouding her hands.

Rarity and Availability in Organized Play

A dhampir human who wields sword and flame. A leshy vigilante who patrols the streets in a bright mask. A hobgoblin champion who looks positively dashing in his Golden Legion epaulets. Today, let’s take a bit of a look into how rarity and access combine to show what options are legal for use in Organized Play (and how you can play that dhampir leshy vigilante dragon disciple, if that’s what you want!).

August Update— Release Schedule, Sanctioning, Spotlights and Conventions!

Wow. Eleven weeks. That is how long it's been since we decided to move PaizoCon online. In those eleven weeks, we’ve organized three major online conventions with over 2,700 games. Huge thank yous to all the GMs, HQ, and organizing committee volunteers who jumped in to help us bring the program online. While we aren’t finished with our online events (Virtually Expo and PAX Online are coming up soon), there is a bit of breathing room for us to evaluate our methodologies and streamline some best practices. The reality is that we aren’t going to have large in person gatherings for the rest of 2020 and potentially into 2021, so we want to establish workable methods to keep our organized play programs functioning in our new existence.

New Character Options for Pathfinder and Starfinder Society Play

With Gen Con Online just two weeks away, the organized play team remains focused on getting our last items out the door. The Gen Con organizing committee has also just finished meeting to put polish on the final pieces. And while we won’t be building out the Sagamore Ballroom this year, our offerings are no less impressive—the Gen Con catalog includes approximately 900 events in six languages. We’ve got one-hour Quests and Bounties, two-hour Adventure Card Society scenarios, and five-hour Scenarios for both Pathfinder Society and Starfinder Society, not to mention more events soon to come: panels featuring Paizo staffers talking about some upcoming products, answering fan questions, and giving a peek into the life of a Paizo staffer. The Scales of Fate

The Pathfinder Society organized play campaign has been, since its inception, a game where the community of players across the world can shape the stories we tell and play a hand in determining the course of Golarion. Over the years, the Society has completed many adventures alongside kobold allies, including both the Sewer Dragons and other kobold tribes across the Inner Sea and beyond. It is my pleasure to announce that, when the Advanced Player’s Guide releases in August, kobolds will be joining the ranks of always-available ancestries for Pathfinder Society players. We’re excited to meet the new kobold recruits in just a few short weeks! Until then…

No two characters worship the same way. How and why they worship their deities are as varied as the player base of Paizo’s organized play campaign. In some cases, adventuring parties form around one of these custom pantheons, becoming regional memes that take on a life of their own. Perhaps you have created a Pathfinder pantheon yourself?

Musings from the Organized Play Manager

Wow. What a week! In a typical year, this week would’ve been a trip to Reno for GAMA trade show. My days at GAMA mean lots of meetings with industry folk, talking to retailers, and generally spreading the word about Paizo’s organized play programs. But this year is anything but typical. I’m not one to get flustered about epidemics – lived in England during Mad Cow and in South Korea during the last SARS outbreak – but even I’m finding the information overload surrounding Covid-19 overwhelming. This morning, half my emails were from companies talking about the steps they are taking to contain and protect from the virus. I’m glad everyone’s taking steps to minimize the footprint and restrain the outbreak.

About a month ago, we put out the call for an associate to join the organized play team. Our community heard the request and many folks sent in resumes. Alas, we could only choose one person to join our team. After some deliberation, we asked Alex Speidel, the venture-agent from Cleveland, Ohio. It will take a bit for him to relocate, but we expect to have him join us in Redmond before the end of the month. When he arrives, we’ll have him introduce himself in further detail. But for now, a huge thank you to all those who applied for the position, we appreciate your interest, time and effort expended in applying, and a huge welcome to Alex.

February Update— Achievement Points , Stars, Novas, Spotlights and Conventions!

The last week saw great progress on the backlog of organized play tasks. I’ve reviewed resumes for the new Organized Play Associate position, posted a blog with Pathfinder Society (second edition) sanctioning, and made progress on onboarding our venture-officer volunteers from the Organized Play Foundation. There are other tasks, that we aren’t quite ready to reveal, that got crossed off the to-do list. While not over the hill, we made progress up the slope.

Wrapping up Organized Play in 2019

With year-end fast approaching, I enjoy taking a moment to reflect on everything that happened the prior year and put some broad strokes in place for the future. It doesn’t feel like twelve months since we did the last review, but you know the saying – “Time flies when you’re having fun!” This time around, I asked the other Organized Play team members to give their thoughts as well. You can find their musings a bit further down the page. Thurston Hillman, Starfinder Society Developer, didn’t send me one, so the next time you see him, be sure to ask about his 2019!

Musings from Organized Play Land

Life as an Organized Play developer is filled with surprises. There’s almost never a day when I sit down at my desk in the morning, put on my headphones, and just work on a scenario until it’s time to go home. There are always other questions, minor projects, and conversations that crop up. It’s challenging in a way that keeps things engaging and exciting. Over the course of my four and a half years here, I’ve gotten the chance to learn so many different skills. And it wasn’t all the ones I expected. Sure, I’ve become better at writing, editing, mapping, and pacing adventures. But I’ve also learned how to run auditions, how to speak to crowds without being nervous, and, at the risk of sounding like a corny after-school special, I learned to believe in myself. A big part of what makes the experience on the Organized Play team so positive and has helped me grow as a person is the people. My team is awesome. We joke around, give each other a light-hearted hard time, and share our triumphs and struggles. And when misfortune strikes, we have each other’s backs. I’m so fortunate to have the coworkers I do.

Shortly after the first whispers of a new edition of Pathfinder first started circulating, we knew that organized play would play a major role in playtesting. While our team's quite experienced at designing adventures, we swiftly realized there was one thing we stood no chance at creating in 2018: fair rewards for a game whose final form could change dramatically and unpredictably based on playtest results (to say nothing of our wanting tons of Chronicle sheet feedback, so we couldn't even create long-term character records).

In deciding to launch new year storylines at Origins, we needed to move up our time line for announcements. If you want join myself, lead developer John Compton, and developer Thurston Hillman at Origins for the premier of Starfinder Season Year 2, you can find the Origins catalog of events on the Origins website.

February-March Additional Resources

In addition to working on the latest scenarios, the Pathfinder Society team's been reviewing the many exciting new player options published in February and March. These cover Pathfinder #139: The Dead Roads (which has a remarkable amount of player content), Pathfinder #140: Eulogy for Roslar's Coffer, and Pathfinder Player Companion: Heroes of Golarion. All told, it's a huge number of character options, including some choice pieces for rarely-supported player races like shabtis, wyrwoods, and duskwalkers. We've pulled together all of our Additional Resources and Campaign Clarifications updates (including a few developer clarifications from the Heroes of Golarion product discussion thread), which should be updated on the website soon. In addition to these books' new content, there are a few minor changes being implemented:

Introducing the Pathfinder Adventure Card Society

I'm currently in Reno attending the GAMA trade show. It is our chance to meet with many retailers and present seminars on all things Paizo. We also have a booth on the exhibition floor where attendees can try out the new Starfinder Beginner Box, talk with the team about Pathfinder Second Edition and try a demo of the revised Adventure Card Game. So far, feedback from the floor is highly receptive on all fronts.

Organized Play Thoughts

Three-day US holiday weekends brings a plethora of conventions, especially in inclement weather months when indoor hobbies reign supreme. I just got back from GenghisCon in Aurora, Colorado, and leave tomorrow for Mace West in Asheville, North Carolina. The advantage of attending mid-sized shows comes in having time to focus on the community and interact with attendees on a personal level. Some of my favorite moments come from running games. Watching a player succeed at a skill or discover a bit of lore energizes me! Talking tips and tricks with other GMs allows me to take bits for my own toolbox. There are many facets of our organized play program that I enjoy working with, but interactions with our community usually tops the list.

February 2019 Starfinder Society Releases

February's scenarios begin the lovely countdown to what I like to call "Convention Season" which, for the Starfinder Society Roleplaying Guild, really kicks off at Origins. Luckily, February's scenarios also provide an excellent new recruitment option to our GMs in the field, and a scenario that continues a plotline many players have (rather vocally) expressed interest in. So, how about we dig into this month's scenarios!

New Scenarios: Repairing Old Damage

This week marks the anniversary of my sixth year working at Paizo and overseeing the organized play content development. Almost one month done with 2019 and the organized play team's chugging away at our to-do list. Meetings over the past few weeks yielded results such as Year 2 storylines for Starfinder Society, and factions/storylines for the next iteration of Pathfinder Society. We've spent a goodly amount of our meetings talking about player feedback we collated from a variety of places - forums, surveys, convention discussions, and Facebook. Community commentary allows us the opportunity to craft a program that appeals to our player base. Paizo requested volunteers for Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild, Pathfinder Society Adventure Card Guild, Pathfinder Society Academy, Starfinder Society, and Pathfinder Society version 2 at PaizoCon, Origins, Gen Con, UK Games Expo and PAX Unplugged. Registration launches on Friday, January 18, 2019 at 9a.m. EST. To register, visit OPF Convention Volunteer Page and complete questionnaires for the events you wish to attend. Due to how requests are processed by convention organizing committees, you will need to complete a different questionnaire for every event you wish to volunteer for. Registering early on will ensure maximum choice of program and level of volunteerism, though cancellations mean volunteers are often accepted up to the week before the event.

Additional Resources and Signal of Screams

This year's been a busy one, particularly with all of the work that's gone into creating Pathfinder Playtest scenarios, reviewing feedback, discussing the Second Edition organized play program's structure, and conveying that in a bunch of really big blogs. While that's been really productive from a looking-to-the-future perspective, it's been less fulfilling in the present because we had fallen way behind in our Additional Resources and Campaign Clarifications process. Over the past 8 weeks, the developers have revisited how we approach these books, devised better ways to streamline the whole process, and pushed through numerous months' content.

Honor Demands It

We're approaching the end of a glorious Starfinder Society year, and we wanted to make sure we ended December with a narrative bang. It's amazing to look back at everything we've accomplished. Not only did 2018 kick off with our introduction to morlamaws (yes, it's really only been a year), but it's also featured reality television events, much-anticipated pop concerts, and wildlife benefit fundraisers. We also saw the return of an ancient starship from Pathfinder Society, debuted Starfinder Society's first multi-table interactive special, and scaled up to two scenarios a month. Needless to say, it's been a busy year, and that calls for some more fun adventures.

Full Moon, Hot Blood

As we brainstorm adventures, the team often comes up with ideas that we have to shelve for months or even years before they come to fruition. When we were looking at our season's schedule months ago, we had several open Tier 3-7 slots, and at long last there was the opportunity to realize one of my dream two-part series that's perfect for the Halloween season. It's been floating in my head since a shortly after Pathfinder Society Scenario #5-16: Destiny of the Sands, Part 3: Sanctum of the Sages, which has a somewhat famous and temporary character augmentation. The idea that we could use that concept for something as strange as a monstrous template, though... that's always been a bit of a dream. Thankfully, Linda was ready to take the lead on developing our Mysteries Under Moonlight series, and she's going to jump in to say some more.

Future of Pathfinder Society Update

When we announced the Pathfinder Playtest in February, some of the first questions revolved around what Pathfinder Society would look like in the new edition. One of the questions the organized play team asked was what gave the Society its heart - made it the robust organized play system it is - and what could be improved. We've spent the last six months analyzing the past ten years of Society play, from how we organize scenarios to what role the Society has in the greater Pathfinder universe. We also asked our community feedback, posting several threads soliciting commentary on some of the key pieces of the Society. While we still have months of playtesting to go and aren't ready to make final decisions about what to include in our new Society, we did want to revisit the forum threads where we posed questions to the community, discuss the emerging trends, and refocus the discussion towards the most likely options.

One of the advantages of this team's creating organized play scenarios for the better part of a decade (it surprises me that I can truthfully say that) is that we're now very familiar with how Pathfinder Society scenarios are laid out, how we word certain things, and countless other nuances. New Scenarios: Over the Mountains and Through the Woods

Spring has arrived, and that means that the Organized Play team is in full gear preparing for convention season. Tonya talked about some of the exciting offerings we have coming up next month at PaizoCon in last week's blog, so if you haven't seen that yet, I recommend checking it out. I've attended PaizoCon for the past six years, and I've always had a wonderful time. Sometimes I play pretty much the whole time, sometimes I GM more, and other times I keep my schedule light so I can focus on meeting new people and reconnecting with old friends, but I've always found it well worth the trip.

Organized Play at PaizoCon 2018!

Convention planning involves lots of juggling, starting with what scenarios to offer. As an organizer, you want to schedule games players can participate in. The need for schedule juggling amplifies when we look at the Paizo-sponsored conventions—PaizoCon, Origins, and Gen Con. For those, we need several spotlight events, new scenarios, and a balance of the current season's offerings. At one of the organized team meetings a few months back, we decorated a white board with products releasing by August 2018 and started shuffling things around.

Starfinder Society Sanctioning and Schemes!

As I write this blog, we're on the road to soon release our twelfth and thirteenth scenarios, which is a pretty great milestone! One thing I've certainly noticed over the course of the Starfinder Society Roleplaying Guild's development is a wide array of opinions and thoughts with regards to the tier structure for the campaign. I wanted to take some time to discuss some of our internal thoughts on this, and what players can expect to see going forward.

I know time flies quickly, but when our new developer, Michael Sayre, noted that he started 7 weeks ago, it caught me by surprise. Then I realized while I've gotten to know Michael, we hadn't introduced him to our organized play family. So I asked him to describe himself in a few sentences and encourage those of you attending PaizoCon or Gen Con to come by and say hi to the newest person behind organized play!

Origins—Launching into a New Starfinder Society Season

From the first, the organized play team envisioned Starfinder Society as a stand-alone campaign. So when discussing season rotation, we looked for a way to give the event spotlight focus. Putting the launch at Gen Con would overload the team and possibly diminish the impact of the Pathfinder Society season rotation. So we looked to another large event that would have the scope to handle a season premier. Origins Game Faire, June 13-17 in Columbus, Ohio, met our desires. Thus we brought Origins under the umbrella of Paizo-organized conventions. But not only Starfinder Society benefits from the expanded Paizo focus. It also brings an opportunity to play Version C of the Solstice Scar ongoing interactive event and the chance to participate in some Pathfinder Playtest demos. Another benefit is added rewards for GMs, namely store credit for the paizo.com webstore, volunteer t-shirts, and a copy of a Pathfinder or Starfinder hardcover book, in addition to rewards offered in previous years such as hotel rooms and boons.

Starfinder Society, From the Streets to the Stars!

March sees some major changes for the Starfinder Society Roleplaying Guild. This month, we transition to two scenarios per month—after all, we can't lag behind the adventure path line switching to one adventure per month! Luckily, the organized play team had contingencies for Starfinder's rampant success, and many of the stories we want to tell were based on a potential two scenario per month rollout. So, without any further rambling on my part, how about we take a peek at the March releases?

Unseasonably Warm?

If you haven't heard the stereotypes, Seattle has a rather dreary reputation for being constantly cloudy, rainy, chilly, and damp. That's only about 80% true; our summers (starting a little before PaizoCon) are quite beautiful and warm. However, it's around late February that I'm rather desperate for the feel direct sunlight and warmth. Apparently this month's scenarios got the memo, and both involve a swelteringly welcome break from the northern hemisphere's winter.

Find out Next Time, on Starfinder Society!

It's safe to say that John Compton and I can get a tad excited about campaign storylines. When we first sat down to start hashing out the first wave of Starfinder Society scenarios, we came up with a huge list of ideas that pulled from popular Pathfinder Society scenarios, common sci-fi tropes and more. Of these ideas, perhaps none stood out more than one fateful thought I threw into the mix after reading about Eox: "What if we have the Starfinders take part in a reality TV show?"

Solstice Scar Update

At PaizoCon 2017, Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild launched a new form of multi-table interactive special (usually shortened to just “a Special”). In doing so, we changed up two big assumptions from past Specials. First, other Specials traditionally kicked off a new season and included integral plot developments that really incentivized playing that Special as soon as possible. Second, those Specials were each built to be self-contained, to portray snapshot events that never evolved, and needed to be built from the ground up each time. As we explored new ways to provide Specials to more conventions—particularly to those taking place between January and May, by which point many people have already played the big Special that debuted at Gen Con the previous year—we developed Pathfinder Society Special #8–99: The Solstice Scar, a modular Special comprised of numerous 90-minute-long parts that can be swapped out over time to tell an evolving story.

We're Gonna Start a New Life, Under the Sea

I'm the first to admit that when I first read the Starfinder Core Rulebook, I quirked an eyebrow at some of the environmental protections armor offers. Coming from other RPGs, it was clear that Starfinder had a different concept of what environmental hazards should challenge PCs. When it came time to outline Starfinder Society #1-08: Sanctuary of Drowned Delight, I discovered that Starfinder armor provided a plethora of opportunities for adventuring in environments often reserved for higher-level play in other games. So, despite being a Tier 3-6 scenario, this month's scenario is going underwater!

Quoth the Tengu, "Adventure More"

One of the great advantages of working in the organized play medium is that we produce so many scenarios. That means that when there's a lot of fan interest in a certain area, group, or topic, we can usually look a little further down the schedule and say, "I think we could make some room here." Every since Pathfinder Society Scenario #6-13: Of Kirin and Kraken we've had more requests for adventures set in Kwanlai and featuring tengus. For that matter, ever since Taldor was a Pathfinder Society faction, players and GMs have asked me when they'd be able to bring about serious reform in that nation—admittedly some were asking so that they could snag a better noble title. This month we're doing both, and we're really pleased with the scenarios releasing today.

These Are a Few of Our Favorite Things (of 2017)

This past year has been a big wild ride. We launched Starfinder to great success, had a busy Gen Con watching the book fly off the shelves, and put out some amazing books that aren't set in space. We've even had some changes in our line-up, with changing job titles and responsibilities that helped a number of us take a step up. 2017 has been full of excitement (and a little chaos, but what creative endeavor doesn't have at least a little chaos?). It's been a busy year for everyone here at Paizo, and I wanted to give the developers and designers a chance to talk about some of the projects they've worked on this year that they've enjoyed working on the most. Being a creator can be rough sometimes, and it's important to feel pride about the things you've helped make.

Introducing the Concordance Faction!

In Season 8 of the Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild, the Pathfinder Society set its sights far from Golarion. Pathfinders soared through the skies of the Plane of Air, swam through the endless oceans of the Plane of Water, embroiled themselves in genie politics on the Plane of Fire, and brought lost and forgotten secrets to light on the Plane of Earth. And while they were hopping through the planes, the Pathfinders ran headfirst into the plans of a group called the Concordance of Elements. The Concordance first came onstage as a fierce opponent to the Pathfinder Society, but ultimately became an ally. In the interests of keeping this blog low on spoilers, I'll just say: nothing like an angry demigod to help two groups set aside their differences. But what began as an alliance of desperation evolved into a genuine partnership.

The Changing Lore Warden

The Additional Resources for Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Adventurer's Guide notes that any material that changed when it appeared in this book (and underwent several additional rounds of development) would be the default version once the book's contents appear on the Pathfinder Reference Document. Until then, we've let both versions remain legal, for we're not going to institute a change that requires someone to buy another book to use a previously legal character. When we made that Additional Resources update, we expected the PRD would appear soon afterward. It's looking like it will be a while yet before it shows up, and consternation about one of the archetypes in particular—the lore warden—has been building enough that we're resolving it today.

The Year of Factions' Favor has several intended themes—most notably a chance to feature factions' storylines in exciting ways—but Linda and I have found that this season lends itself to two themes that are equally gratifying: bringing back past NPCs and having them team up with the PCs directly to do awesome things. If you've followed earlier Pathfinder Society stories, you'll no doubt recognize several of these characters, as well as many more in the months to come. Even if you're newer to the campaign, we introduce these curators, adventurers, schemers, and scallywags in a way that should bring you up to speed in no time—and if you want recommendations on earlier scenarios to play leading up to these, the community's always happy to identify earlier pieces of the larger story.

Guides, Characters, and Conventions!

Well, I'm at Gen Con in the middle of the Sagamore Ballroom. Spent the morning sorting banners and getting them ready for hanging. This afternoon, the team put the final touches on Pathfinder Society and Starfinder Society Roleplaying Guild Guides. So without further ado, the Guides!

Pathfinding to Starfinding

Since the announcement of the Starfinder Society Roleplaying Guild, us members of the Organized Play team have been getting a lot of questions about the differences between Starfinder Society and Pathfinder Society. So, we agreed that it was probably a good idea to do a blog on some of the major changes. And awaaaaaaaay, we go!

That's No Boon...

Gen Con's only about a week away—I'm sure my colleagues' fainting away is out of sheer excitement—and Paizo's organized play team is bringing a huge amount of new content to debut. It's too much to share all in one blog, so we're saving our six new scenarios (three Pathfinder Society and three Starfinder Society) for next week and starting off with our special events.

Cheers, Contests, and Conventions

As Season 8 of the Pathfinder Society winds down and we prepare to launch three new seasons of organized play at Gen Con 50, it's time to say thank you to some of the folks who make our games and programs fantastic. Whether you are a dedicated GM, running games in your community every week, or a convention organizer, who puts together the large shows, your efforts are seen and appreciated. We cannot have a community our size (84,000 players and growing) without having the volunteers to support it. To all of you, our team sends kudos and thanks.

Faction Overview: Acquisitives

True to their history, Acquisitives are the most mercenary of the Starfinder Society factions. Their goals often involve promoting the Starfinder Society to the extent that it will increase the personal reputation of all members. They stockpile funds and resources, believing that by maintaining such a treasury, the faction can make itself indispensable to other factions within the Society. Indeed, many Starfinders pledge themselves, to varying degrees, to the Acquisitives faction for access to these assets. This influx of recruits is the direct byproduct of the Acquisitives' existing cache of resources, not to mention their preference of sending Starfinders on missions leading to personal glory and monetary enrichment.

Disparate Elements, Epic Stories

While we're excited for the launch of so many new adventures at Gen Con in a few more weeks, Season 8 cannot be overshadowed with its last two scenarios. Just as the Society has gathered extraordinary tools with which to crack the Untouchable Opal, so too has Season 8 brought together exciting scenarios to explore the elemental planes. Both of these adventures are fitting capstones.

Faction Overview: Dataphiles

Churches, corporations, governments, and other organizations all have secrets. The Dataphiles work to uncover these secrets, deciding what to share and what to store in their vast data vaults inside Archive's Cortex, a sector of the Lorespire Complex in Absalom Station. While not all information is shared beyond the Dataphiles' archives, the simple act of guarding knowledge acts as a guiding light for the Dataphiles. Data comes in many forms, and the Dataphiles employ more than just computer-specialists in their ranks. Those Starfinders skilled at withdrawing information from sentient creatures—either by coercion, discourse, or trickery—are highly valued. As their sites of interest are among the best-defended installations in the galaxy, the Dataphiles also have a pressing need for trained combat specialists—whether to have a strong arm protecting a hacker during a delicate operation, or to have an armed ally capable of getting the prize out alive.

Leaders in Liberty

Last week we shared how Season 9 of the Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guildthe Year of Factions' Favor—is poised to deliver exciting stories to the campaign's factions. The organized play campaigns wouldn't be possible without the efforts of our four-person team, so it makes sense that our faction leaders would also appreciate advancing their respective goals with the help of elite specialists. In fact, several factions already have such a setup, such as how Tahonikepsu leads the Scarab Sages with the assistance of Amenopheus and how Aaqir al'Hakam directs the Exchange with the help of Guaril Karela's rather underhanded expertise. There are some big events in the works for the Liberty's Edge faction, and we want to introduce someone who can play a part in upcoming events and share in the spotlight.

Faction Overview: Wayfinders

The Wayfinders represent some of the Society's foremost experts in first contact scenarios. An organization dedicated to fully pursuing the Starfinder Society's mission statement of exploration, the Wayfinders are at the forefront of expeditions to scan a planet, set foot on an asteroid, or greet a previously unknown species. Wayfinders have a natural passion for exploration, be it through social situations with new species or discovering ancient alien ruins.

Where the First Seeker leads, the Second Seekers follow. Exemplifying dutiful service, the Second Seekers follow-through on the Society's pledge to support the First Seeker, the elected head of the Starfinder Society. Unlike other factions, the goals of the Second Seekers vary over time, adapting to each new leader's mission.

Exploring Factions' Favor

In the pursuit of ancient secrets and unclaimed treasures, the Pathfinder Society doesn't just make discoveries; it also makes enemies. A cast of the campaign's greatest villains has conspired to take their revenge against the Pathfinder, bringing war to the footstep of the great city Absalom and chaos to the Inner Sea region. For years, factions within the Society have championed their own agendas, fought for recognition, and accumulated resources. At last they have a chance to prove themselves—an experience that could leave these organizations changed forever in Season 9 of the Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild: the Year of Factions' Favor.

Faction Overview: Exo-Guardians

The creed of the Exo-Guardians is to protect the Pact Worlds from external threats. In the context of their membership within the Starfinder Society, this most often relates to participating in missions to acquire relics or technology of a defensive nature. Exo-Guardians excel in missions that lead to such discoveries, but they also serve an important secondary role within the Society of "sending a message" to threats that interfere in Society business. Be it a derelict starship overrun with mindless alien vermin, or a supposedly impenetrable fortress operated by forces opposed to the Society, it's often the Exo-Guardians who come in to handle the situation.

OPC Log—5 Erastus, 4017

The sun beats down on the northern hemisphere, while the southern hemisphere enjoys its cooler season. While some folk enjoy the heat, I'm thinking the 117 Fahrenheit in Las Vegas is just a wee bit too hot. Soon I'll return to the Pacific Northwest, but not for long. July finds us halfway through the summer convention season, which launches with the plethora of conventions on Memorial Day and ends with the Labor Day extravaganza! Which means lots of travel and meeting new players.

A Game of Boons

As previously announced in interviews and at our PaizoCon panel, Starfinder Society is changing up the Roleplaying Guild's handling of boons. Boons are non-standard rewards granted on the Chronicle sheets you get for completing Starfinder Society scenarios and sanctioned content. For all you Pathfinder Society veterans out there, the current boon system involves finding special boons on a Chronicle sheet and mentally keeping track of them throughout the course of your character's career. The existing system allows for a character to accrue a lot of boons over the course of her career, but it also requires a lot of tracking on the player's end. Did you remember that your second Chronicle sheet gave you a +1 circumstance bonus to negotiating with gnolls from western Katapesh? (John likes using that one as an example, a lot. He also wants me to remind Pathfinder Society players, that six seasons later, that boon is still relevant!)

Earth, Fire, and Shoanti

In the final months of the Year of the Stolen Storm, the Pathfinder Society has secured all but one piece of what it needs to destroy an artifact and unleash a powerful force of good. As we gear up for this finale, the organized play team is gearing up for Gen Con—all three Pathfinder Society scenarios, three Starfinder Society scenarios, a Pathfinder Society multi-table interactive special, a Starfinder Society pregenerated character special, five new Starfinder Society quests, a huge portion of the Adventure Card Guild's new season, and several dozen new boons for distribution at conventions over the course of the year. Of course we have precious few weeks to go before those start arriving in Gen Con GMs' downloads, and there are several exciting scenarios coming out this week.

A Few More Answers

Familiars and animal companions are loyal allies that can be of great assistance to your PCs. Adjudicating rules around them can get messy, however, particularly in an organized campaign like the Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild. When we updated the Pathfinder Society FAQ a few months ago, we left a big "We'll get back to this" at the top of the question regarding familiars and magic item use. We knew this was going to be a hugely time-consuming project, so we enlisted help from a team of community members: Lau Bannenberg, Steven Lau, Bradley McTeer, and Roger Sidebotham. Thanks to their efforts, we were able to pull together a comprehensive guide to every magic-item related question we could think of for familiars. In addition to updating the list of who can use wands, we tackled the thorny question of magic item slots. Many hours of "Does a floating head have different magic item slots than a floating helmet?" later, we created a magic item slot chart for every familiar that it is possible to acquire in the Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild.

It is summer, the sun is shining, and Pathfinder Society games abound. I'm working hard with the Pathfinder Society team in pulling edges together for the conclusion of Year of the Stolen Storm and the launch of the Year of Factions' Favor. Lots of great news, but I'll leave that to a different blog for more information. For today, I'll focus on all the great things going on in our community!

Stay Alert, Holy Plasma Cannons Ahead!

PaizoCon manages to land on near-perfect holiday weekends with bright and glorious sunshine making the first signs of summer at the forefront of minds in the Pacific Northwest. And as we all know, that means that convention season has begun—with local cons, big ones, and the Best 4 Days in Gaming (Gen Con) looming around the corner! I'm taking a few minutes here at the nice and quiet (and empty) Paizo offices to give those of you who didn't make it out the PaizoCon 2017 Preview Banquet last night a glimpse of some of the fun you can expect this summer (and beyond!).

A Talk About Cooperation

There are three important duties for every Pathfinder field agent: Explore, Report, and Cooperate. These tenants remain a core foundation of the Starfinder Society organization. Sealed Heroes, Sealed Friends

The Pathfinder Society recently won the Sargava Chalice in the eponymous footrace, but few know that the trophy cup is actually a cyclops relic dating back to Ghol-Gan. In Pathfinder Society Scenario #8-21: Champion's Chalice, Part 2: Agents of the Eye, the PCs carry the chalice deep into the Kaava Lands, where the relic can grant them a unique window into the past and a fallen empire. Author Nicholas Herold takes us to a long-forgotten corner of Golarion's history in this Tier 1-5 scenario, and it's up to the PCs to avert an imminent crisis with the help of desperate allies.

Starfinder Society, Paizo's Newest Organized Play Program

Immediately after the announcement of the Starfinder Roleplaying Game last PaizoCon, our community started speculating about an organized play program to support the new game. We spent the ensuing months looking at workflow and charting out a course that would enable us to have both Starfinder and Pathfinder organized play programs. It delights me to end speculation and announce the launch of Starfinder Society at Gen Con 50!
